Stronger Together: Kids’ Chance Week

Every October, Kids’ Chance Week shines a light on students whose dreams of higher education were made possible after devastating family loss or hardship. This year’s theme, “Stronger Together,” is a fitting reminder that when Alabama’s legal community comes together, lives truly change.

The Alabama Law Foundation is proud to administer the Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program in our state, helping children of workers who have been permanently disabled or killed on the job continue their education. For many families, a workplace injury doesn’t just change a paycheck—it changes a future. Kids’ Chance scholarships open doors to college or technical training that might otherwise be out of reach, offering young people a path forward after tragedy.

Since 1992, this program—created by the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Alabama State Bar—has provided hundreds of scholarships to Alabama students. Awards range from $500 to $2,500 and may be renewed each year a student remains in school. Every application tells a story of resilience and hope: young people determined to build better lives, and a legal community determined to help them do it.

These scholarships are funded through generous contributions from individuals, organizations, and corporations, along with Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts (IOLTA) funds administered by the Alabama Law Foundation. Through IOLTA, lawyers across the state make a quiet but powerful impact—helping support not only Kids’ Chance scholarships, but also other foundation programs that advance civil justice and law-related education.

As we celebrate Kids’ Chance Week, the Alabama Law Foundation honors the students who inspire us and the lawyers whose generosity makes their education possible. Together, we’re giving Alabama’s children the chance to reach their potential—no matter what challenges their families have faced.

If you know a child of any age who may be eligible for a Kids’ Chance scholarship, please refer them to the Kids’ Chance Planning for the Future initiative, so we can continue to support workers’ families for years to come.
