Workers Memorial Day: Honoring Lives, Investing in the Future

Each year on April 28, Workers Memorial Day invites us to pause and reflect—remembering those who lost their lives or were seriously injured on the job, and recognizing the families whose lives were changed in an instant.

Across the country, workplace accidents claim the lives of workers every day. Behind each loss is a family left to face grief, uncertainty, and difficult financial realities. For many children, the path they once imagined—especially the goal of higher education—can suddenly feel out of reach.

Programs like Kids’ Chance of Alabama exist to help bridge that gap. Through scholarships that support college and technical training, Kids’ Chance assists students whose parent has been permanently disabled or killed in a work-related incident. These scholarships help restore a sense of possibility during an incredibly difficult time.

The Alabama Law Foundation plays a vital role in this effort, serving as the administrator of Kids’ Chance Alabama scholarship funds. Through this work, the Foundation helps ensure that contributions from individuals, businesses, and organizations are directed toward meaningful educational opportunities for these students. Scholarships—typically ranging from $500 to $2,500—are awarded annually, and students may apply each year they continue their education.

Originally established by the Workers’ Compensation Section of the Alabama State Bar, Kids’ Chance reflects a shared commitment within the legal community to support families facing the long-term consequences of workplace tragedies.

On this Workers Memorial Day, there are meaningful ways to get involved:

  • Recommend a student who may be eligible for a Kids’ Chance scholarship through the Planning for the Future initiative.
  • Consider making a donation to expand access to educational support for affected families.

By coming together in remembrance and action, we can honor those who have been lost while helping the next generation move forward with opportunity and hope.

The 2026 application cycle for Kids’ Chance scholarships is now OPEN. The deadline to apply is June 2, 2026.
