Turning Interest Into Impact: The Role of Prime Partner Banks in IOLTA

ALF logo and money

Behind every Alabama lawyer who participates in the IOLTA program is a trusted financial institution helping turn small balances into big impact.

The Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts (IOLTA) program, authorized by the Supreme Court of Alabama in 1987, transforms otherwise idle client funds into a powerful force for good. When attorneys hold small or short-term client funds that are not expected to earn net interest for the client, those funds are pooled in an IOLTA account. The interest generated is remitted to the Alabama Law Foundation, which uses it to fund civil legal aid for low-income Alabamians, law-related education, law student support, and more.

But this program wouldn’t be possible without the support of financial institutions across the state—especially our Prime Partner banks.

What Makes a Bank a Prime Partner?

While all participating financial institutions must meet specific criteria to offer IOLTA accounts, such as paying interest rates comparable to similar accounts, Prime Partner banks voluntarily go a step further. These institutions agree to pay at least 55% of the Federal Funds Target Rate on IOLTA accounts, even when it exceeds the minimum requirements. Additionally, Prime Partner banks charge low fees for administrative costs.

That additional interest and savings on fees make a meaningful difference. Every extra dollar helps expand access to justice, support legal aid organizations, and sustain public legal education initiatives across Alabama.

By choosing to become Prime Partners, these banks show a commitment not only to financial services but also to serving the public good.

A Shared Investment in Justice

When attorneys deposit their IOLTA funds at a Prime Partner bank, they know those funds are doing more than sitting in an account—they’re actively working to reduce barriers to justice. The interest earned is directed to grants that help domestic violence survivors secure protection, seniors access benefits, and families avoid wrongful evictions.

This work is made possible because banks choose to treat IOLTA participation not just as a regulatory requirement, but as an opportunity to be part of something bigger.

Prime Partner banks are helping write a better story for thousands of Alabamians who face legal problems they cannot afford to solve on their own.

Why It Matters

Since its inception, Alabama’s IOLTA program has awarded more than $25 million in grants for law-related charitable work. From legal aid clinics to courthouse law libraries, the interest generated from IOLTA accounts helps meet needs that might otherwise go unmet.

Prime Partner banks play a key role in this impact. Their enhanced interest rates generate more revenue for grants, fueling critical legal services that uphold dignity, safety, and fairness in communities statewide.

Choosing Justice in Everyday Business

For banks, participation in the IOLTA program—and especially in the Prime Partner tier—is more than a financial decision. It’s a reflection of values. It signals to customers, communities, and the legal profession that their institution is committed to strengthening Alabama’s justice system from the ground up.

When legal professionals choose a Prime Partner for their IOLTA accounts, they are helping ensure that small amounts of client money can grow into grants that make a life-changing difference.

Working Together for Access to Justice

The Alabama Law Foundation is proud to collaborate with banks and attorneys alike to make access to justice a reality—not just a principle. We invite eligible financial institutions to learn more about how they can join the IOLTA program, and how becoming a Prime Partner can amplify their community impact.

In every remittance, in every grant awarded, and in every life touched, we see the result of what’s possible when banks and lawyers work together toward a shared goal: equal justice for all.
