For the past several years the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service has sponsored a National Pro Bono Celebration each October. This year it is October 21 – October 25. Pro bono lawyers are a crucial part of providing access to justice to low-income residents of Alabama who can’t afford to pay legal fees. The ABA’s goals for the National Pro Bono Celebration are listed below:
1. Recruiting more pro bono volunteers and increasing legal services to poor and vulnerable people.
2. Mobilizing community support for pro bono.
3. Fostering collaborative relationships
4. Recognizing the pro bono efforts of America’s lawyers
Alabama’s five pro bono programs, the Volunteer Lawyers Programs, have taken the Pro Bono Celebration to heart and lead the nation in scheduling events during pro bono week to provide civil legal services to clients. There is a list of pro bono week events and information on signing up as a volunteer at the Alabama State Bar website.
Even if you’re not a pro bono lawyer you can help out by shopping at Books-A-Million on Saturday, October 26. Ten percent of sales using the VLP Bookfair code will be donated to the Volunteer Lawyers Programs. Print out the card below and take it with you when you shop. Purchases made using a Millionaire’s Club card aren’t eligible for the donation so leave your card in your wallet!
